USHERING IN AN ERA OF CONTEMPORARY EXTRAVAGANCE
With an incredible drive, great zeal and warm smile, Sanjeeb Pattanaik, Resort Manager, MAYFAIR Lake Resort, Raipur in a freewheeling interview with TravelScapes reveals how this luxury resort is catering to the requirements of the ever-growing MICE and the lucrative wedding segment, attracting guests not only from Raipur but central India as well. He elaborates why in F&B in Raipur has evident leverage over other segments
What are the upcoming plans for MAYFAIR Lake Resort, Raipur to make it reach new heights?
We have recently launched Raipur’s most exotic and luxurious brand MAYFAIR Lake Resort, Raipur and in my opinion, it’s the best property in Central India. It’s so incredible that it markets itself and is growing strong by word of mouth. People from Raipur and central India are increasingly visiting this resort that itself speaks for the popularity it has gained in a short period. We, as a MAYFAIR Group, are actively engaging in promotions across all channels ranging from print, electronic and social media, all of this enhances the popularity of the property, as well.
Given your experience across a bunch of markets, how different is Raipur as a market?
Raipur is a closely-knit commercial market. In terms of revenue, this market is most suited for MICE. People of Raipur are food buffs and thus we believe that the F&B segment would fetch more revenue than the room segment. Both our restaurants, TeaPot and Mamma Mia serve scrumptious cuisine. There are live kitchen stations where the patrons can interact with the chefs and dishes can be personalised according to their liking. Here the guests can savour what can probably be called the town’s best buffet, which is massive in terms of the sheer variety that’s available here. We try to go beyond the usual and create something unique yet flavoursome in terms of the preparation and cuisine. Even the Jungle Bar has everything working in its favour to become a popular party address among the youth giving off a vibe of Chhattisgarh jungle. The Baron & Baroness is a classic bar with a laidback feel to it while Lounge Bar is a highenergy bar with a disco and karaoke. We have different bars suiting the interests of different age groups. With the vast lawn and lake as well as the rooms offering copious space, MAYFAIR Lake Resort, Raipur is a spread out property and a destination in its own right. We are aiming to capture a large chunk of MICE and the wedding segment of guests.
How do you keep yourself and the team motivated, especially in this demanding job? Retaining a loyal hotel staff involves an investment of steadfast motivation and I actively impart that as they are my key assets. In the process of encouraging them, I also get motivated. It begins with keeping yourself happy, creating a positive vibe around that also persuades your staff, who is your strength, to stay happy and with you. The service industry is not a time-bound job and one needs to keep them positive and charged up at all times. Several times I feel low as well but I know that my staff is looking up to me and I also look at them for motivation. I believe that if I am successful it is because of my staff’s teamwork. We focus on employee engagement activities as well to boost their morale, be it playing sports, games or watching movies together. We keep them abreast of the latest technology and current developments of the hotel industry world over as we also believe in imparting education and enhancing their knowledge.
What according to you is MAYFAIR Lake Resort, Raipur’s biggest revenue earner?
Weddings fetch major revenue for the property and we are booked for the next few months. The trend that I have witnessed in Raipur is mostly of residential weddings where the guests’ book the rooms for two to three days where various celebrations are hosted beside pool parties, wedding and reception. During summer and monsoon season the wedding and functions are hosted in the courtyard and ballroom area while during winters it shifts to the open-air lawn near the lakeside.
Tell us about the role of technology in the hospitality industry and how is MAYFAIR as a brand leveraging it?
We are always improving and upgrading ourselves in terms of adopting better technology to make the experience smoother and it’s a continuous process. Our property management software is cloud-based and we also have HRMS software installed for the employees. We are using cost-saving technology and are also trying to introduce Artificial Intelligence into the system for seamless check-in of the guests.
Give us an insight into your plans for driving occupancy and RevPAR at the property?
We have our central reservation system, regional offices across the country, GSA’s in Mumbai and Bengaluru and a central office as well. Apart from the staff who work on the CRAs, revenue management and those who deal with OTAs, offline and online sales. We also promote our resort via online and social media channels. It’s a process and the employees are given their targets which have been seamlessly achieved so far.
What’s your management style? How do you ensure the MAYFAIR standards are met?
We focus on external and internal customers. If external customers or the guests are treated well and leave with memorable experience, they end up giving us more business. The internal customers are our staff to whom great attention is given and are taken care of by us. They are our assets who perform. I believe a great hotel does not achieve this repute due to its architecture or design but because of the people behind that hotel who make it successful. We aim to keep both of these customers exultant.
