Head to the lesser explored ?Salalah? for quick weekend getaway

Ideal time of the year to visit Salalah is between June to September

Salalah, the second largest city situated in the Dhofar region (south) of Oman, is blessed with distinctive natural diversity where the coast blends with the mountains and the desert in wonderful harmony so that the mountains look like a fertile crescent, rising to a height of 1,500 meters and then descending into a flat plain that embraces sandy beaches stretching for hundreds of kilometers. It is a ruggedly beautiful region with a rich history rooted in the ancient frankincense trade and hence is also known as the “Perfume Capital” of Arabia. Salalah, just 1,040 kilometers away from Muscat is easily accessible by air with a quick 1hr.45 minutes flight from the capital of Oman. Also, Oman Air has direct 3.5 hours flight from Kozhikode (Kerala) to Salalah.

Ideal time of the year to visit Salalah is between June- September when the region has beautiful weather and wears a green blanket all over itself due to “Khareef” i.e monsoon. When other regions of Arabia see temperatures rise over 40 degrees Celsius, the temperature of this magnificent province is below 27 degrees Celsius. This is the time when visitors, especially from within Oman and the neighbouring countries visit Salalah to experience light rain drizzle, lush greenery and hills surrounded by white fog.

To add to this, Salalah Tourism Festival takes place from the end of June until the beginning of September which is organized to celebrate the khareef monsoon season that brings cool temperatures and sees vegetation burst into life and flourish. There is an eventful schedule of concerts, traditional cultural shows and activities for families with children, including the fantastic kite festival and camel racing. Shopping events draw into Salalah traders from different countries offering produces not usually available in Salalah. For Book lovers there is usually at least one major book fair.  This year new activities like the Dhofar folklore, arts and traditional handicrafts festival have also been added. As per the statistics from a survey conducted by the National Centre for Statistics and Information, last year, the Khareef season attracted 652,000 visitors around the world to Salalah until September.

The Ministry of Tourism is implementing several service projects, upgrading facilities and focusing on the hotel sector as part of its preparations for the Khareef season. The ministry, represented by the Directorate General of Tourism in Dhofar, provides services to visitors during the Khareef season by setting up temporary tourist information centres, and permanent centres at ports, at the Salalah Airport, Salalah Gardens Mall and Salalah Tourism Centre.

The region also offers golden beaches, azure waters and opportunities to scuba dive, snorkel, sail, Jet Ski among many others. Every year, thousands of migratory birds roost in the marshy khawrs along the costline, turning the entire region into a bird watcher’s paradise. Salalah is home to some of the UNESCO world heritage sites and one can explore Oman's rich marine history at ‘The Museum of the Frankincense Land’ at Al Baleed. Also, there are daily flights between Muscat and Salalah, as well as other Arab Gulf states. During the khareef season, its crisp unpolluted air, cool misty clime, high rolling seas and leafy ambience makes Salalah Oman’s coolest destination.
