MICE travel in India has seen a dramatic transformation over the past decade. With the big downturn in 2008-09 The MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Events) industry almost collapsed while the Movement picked up slowly in the second half of 2009 that saw a gradual growth over time witnessing many MICE movements for both India Outbound and Domestic markets. During this economic slowdown many organizations realized to make greater efforts to organize meetings, events and incentives in order to motivate their best performers and employees with rewards and incentive programs, cultivate customers, organize annual conventions, product launches and exhibitions, Buyer seller meets in an initiative to stride ahead of competition. If planned correctly a MICE Program can indeed be a powerful tool for many to help meet these objectives.

With the increasing number of players in the business Like Hyderabad International Convention Centre HICC, Jaipur Exhibition & convention Centre(JICC), The Lavasa International Convention Centre (LICC), Development of State of the art Airports, Facilitation of Visa on Arrival to over 150 countries and the exotic Incredible India campaigns  that are creating a fantastic visibility for India globally, India has achieved the much needed world class convention facilities that are today capable of attracting serious MICE business into the country.

Rajiv Duggal, Ceo., ‎Lavasa Corporation Ltd.

The LICC, situated right on the banks of the Warasgaon lake, enjoys the benefit of a picturesque location. It is one of the few large convention centers of India that is stand – alone. It is operated by Accor and is spread over 1.5 acres of land, offering 34,500 sq. ft of flexible floor space, 6 additional break out rooms, a board room, a business centre, a media centre and a VIP room. Another advantage about the convention centre is that it is located at a walking distance from all our hotels and this proves to be a huge advantages to the guests.Apart from several awards, it has also been honored by Wb. Honors, for possessing “Efficient Washroom Design in Public Building”.

How does LICC makes a difference in providing the state of the art MICE facilities in regards to meeting the requirements?

It has a huge hall spread across 10,000 Sq. feet which can cater up to 1,500 guests in a theatre style set up. Additionally it offers a guest centre for meetings. There are 6 break – away rooms that range from 1,000 – 1,500 sq. ft. These meeting rooms can be further coupled together to suit the gathering requirement of the event. Additionally, the pre – function area helps in offering extended F & B facility to cater to events like weddings. We have conducted large scale automotive and pharmaceutical events, product launches and film shoots.

What is the trend in MICE movement in India and where do you see it in terms of roping in international players, corporate and destinations ?
MICE has today taken a serious turn from the incentive market that it was a few year ago. India has developed quality Convention Center’s that are capable of hosting medium to large MICE movements. India states are developing various products to attract both domestic & international MICE events. Specialized MICE operators in India are now deriving value by concentrating on this arm of travel business. Corporate on the other hand are also seeing the value in MICE operators for domestic MICE movement, a process they used to previously follow in – house. The new hotels & destinations within India prefer dealing with organized MICE operators rather than the corporate direct. The key to MICE success has always remained the logistic solutions while technology has played a huge role in this fulfillment. MICE will remain a brick & motor solution and that is a positive sign for all involved in the MICE business.

How has the MICE inbound movement grown over time and what are your expectations in terms of number of international conferences happening in India in near future?
The inbound MICE is still nasant, this is due to the fact that quality infrastructure, choice of exotic & historical venues in India is yet a challenge. They can organize a sit down dinner at the London Bridge in UK , but find it difficult to do so at The Taj in Agra. Key to MICE success in the inbound depends on how exclusive can one make the event. However, the increase is visible as the infrastructure in India is getting enhanced, more visibility to iconic buildings as venues and new exotic destinations within the country are being exposed.

Jaipur Exhibition and Convention Centre is the largest pillar-less Exhibition-Convention-Entertainment facility in South Asia.  AccorHotels, the leader in operating convention centres in India, will commence with JECC operations by the end of the year. The  facilities at the JECC  include two massive halls with a combined column-free space of 20,000 sq meters and an exquisite integrated convention centre. The grand facility also has open-air venue options with an open lawn and expansive outdoor exhibition area. The convention centre contains an elegantly designed ballroom measuring over 1,100 sq meters in area and 14 meeting venues split across two levels. JECC is dedicated to deliver the finest event experiences to its guests and travellers.

Could you please highlight on trends in MICE Business (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) and how does JECC make a difference in providing the state of the art MICE facilities in regards to meeting the requirements?
Currently, the MICE industry in India is at a nascent stage, as it lacks the necessary support infrastructure for large exhibitions and grand scale events. However, there is a huge potential in the economy and so the industry is making all-round efforts to tap it. Conference and Tradeshows are the two most important categories of events that happen in India. Between them, they account for 85% of all MICE events. Due to high venue rates and less availability of large scale event venues in metro cities, many corporates and organizers are looking forward to tier 2 cities like Jaipur for their MICE related queries. Some of the major attractions which draw attention to the city of Jaipur are its affordability, accessibility and unique experiences.

JECC has a huge facility with flexible venue options. The state-of-the-art IT infrastructure and equipment, specialized meeting rooms, boardrooms and translation booths for up to 6 languages makes it an ideal venue for travellers from all around the globe. We are the only venue with 2000+car/coach parking base and a service bay for loading and unloading. This provides an operational ease for the conference and exhibition organizers. Support Services: Security, Housekeeping, Exhibition storage, Valet, Dock control, Freight forwarders, Equipment hire, Security audit

What is the trend in MICE movement in India and where do you see it in terms of roping in international players, corporate and destinations?
According to reports, India is going the global way and MICE is fast becoming a major part of its travel and promotional budgets. In the Indian context, incentives is at present the largest component of MICE but in a maturing market, it’s only a matter of time before the entire gamut of MICE activities are undertaken by the Indian corporate world. The Indian sub-continent is emerging as one of the finest Incentive destinations in the world owing to the diverse culture and geography.

How have the MICE inbound movement grown over time and what are your expectations in terms of number of international conferences happening in India in near future?
The Indian companies are still more inclined towards investing their MICE budget on foreign destinations, hence increasing their outbound movement. On the other hand, India is a preferred destination for the international players and has marked itself prominently on the global MICE map. The reason mainly being,  its exquisite natural beauty, availability of all categories of hotels and good connectivity within and outside the country. Jaipur is the most travelled tourist destination and gives an option to combine business and leisure visits. JECC fills the gap of the large convention centers missing in India.

Could you please highlight on the trends in MICE Business (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) and how does HICC make a difference in providing the state of the art MICE facilities in regards to meeting the requirements?
Industry predictions indicate that the MICE sector shall continue to exhibit an upward trend. Recovering after the recession, the MICE market is now springing back, stronger than ever. The demand for meetings is on the rise and though companies are not splurging, luxury venues are not being ruled out either. Favorable international exchange rates have also helped put the focus on India. The modularity that Hyderabad International Convention Centre offers makes it an ideal venue for all sizes of events. HICC has a capacity to accommodate meetings for 50 to 6000 delegates due to the flexible partitions that allow scaling individual halls as per requirement.

Apart from inbuilt power backup generation capability, HICC has a spacious pre-function foyer area of over 6000 sq. meters of lobby space and pillar-less internal hall. The convention centre also has an automated telescopic tiered seating with a capacity of 2500, inbuilt power backup generation capability and 12.5 meters free ceiling height with catwalks and mobile operable walls with service pits every 6 meters, with power, water and internet.

What is the trend in MICE movement in India and where do you see it in terms of roping in international players, corporate and destinations?
For India, improvement in infrastructure and upgradation of airports in cities like Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Chennai makes each of these well suited to the MICE industry. These cities have big convention centres capable of holding large number of conferences and events and also are destinations of cultural interest. Over the years the hospitality industry has grown into a significant contributor towards India’s thrust on increasing both domestic and international tourists. It has also become a generator of jobs and opportunities for the growing youth in the country. With the growth in luxury hospitality and an upsurge in good business hotels and facilities, tourism has received a boost through multiple avenues. Some of the travel policies and processes have also witnessed significant improvements and this has encouraged MICE organizers to consider India as a MICE destination of regional impact.

How has the MICE inbound movement grown over time and what are your expectations in terms of number of international conferences happening in India in near future?
The Indian MICE industry currently organizes approximately 700 trade shows annually. This makes India as one of the emerging MICE destinations to hold conclaves in various sectors such as medical, pharmaceutical, automobile, education, tourism and security to name a few. Internationally MICE business is expected to come from Latin America and East European countries like Slovenia, Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland, which have now begun to show interest in India. As per a recent study, 90 per cent of the international conference business comes to India due to local associations. Medical conferences have taken a front seat and the numbers have been soaring ever since. Over the past two months, we have conducted six big medical conferences (between 1500 - 7500 delegates). We also see an increase in tourism in the country due to the introduction of “Visa on Arrival” for various countries.
