IATO's annual convention in Bhopal aims to reignite inbound tourism The Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), a powerful network of over 1,600 active tour operators, acts as a catalyst for India's tourism industry by connecting members with industry leaders and policymakers. Their annual convention, taking place from August 30 to September 2, 2024, explores the theme of “Resurgent India Inbound” and promises insightful business sessions on pressing industry issues, with participation from experts and government officials. Expect networking opportunities, the IATO Run for Responsible Tourism, and evening entertainment alongside the Indian Tourism Fair, where members can connect with state tourism departments and boost domestic and international promotion. TravelScapes spotlights the upcoming IATO convention in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, getting in touch with the delegates to know the behind-the-scenes of the convention

The idea behind IATOs theme

The theme of the IATO Convention 2024 is ‘Resurgent India Inbound’. India's resurgence as a destination for inbound is a multifaceted phenomenon driven by economic stability, strategic reforms, infrastructure development, technological advancements, favourable demographics, and global integration. The country's proactive approach to fostering a business-friendly environment, coupled with its inherent strengths, has created a compelling narrative for global investors. As India continues to evolve and adapt to the changing global landscape, it stands poised to capitalise on its potential and solidify its position as a key player in the global economy. IATO aims to play the role of a catalyst to synergise the efforts of the policymakers and our nodal ministry to take tourism to the pre-COVID level.

Subject and key ideas of panel discussions

Key ideas that may be highlighted at the convention include policies on marketing and promotion, investment in tourism infrastructure, destination promotion by participating states, business opportunities for tour operators, AI in tourism, and the ideation by the trade bodies on their vision. The subjects for panel discussions are still evolving, however, we are looking at tentative business sessions planned on the convention theme ‘Resurgent India Inbound’, hotels for inbound tourism, lesser-known destinations, marketing and promotion of inbound tourism, connectivity, industry trade bodies, AI in inbound tourism, legal challenges for women empowerment, and a special session on MP tourism.

Government support for enhanced growth of inbound tourism

We expect major support from the Government in the area of marketing and promotion with the rationalisation of taxes, incentives to tour operators on their foreign exchange earnings by the Minister of Commerce, allocation of Rs 1000 Cr for tourism, and an MDA scheme in its established format for tour operators.

The convention stands as one of the premier events in Indian tourism, drawing eminent figures from government, tourism, aviation, and hospitality sectors

Ravi Gosain - Vice President, IATO & Chairman of the Convention

Conventions contribution to the promotion of Madhya Pradesh

The 39th Annual Convention of IATO will be held in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh from August 31 to September 2, 2024. This marks the 39th edition of the annual gathering, which strives to enhance the quality of content and overall experience for IATO delegates. The convention stands as one of the premier events in Indian tourism, drawing eminent figures from government, tourism, aviation, and hospitality sectors. The participation of 900-1000 delegates underscores the significance of this event and the value it offers to attendees. Madhya Pradesh, the host state, will benefit from the IATO convention as the travel agents and tour operators will get first-hand experience of the tourism products and local hospitality offered by the state. We will be organising 10 post-FAM trips which will take around 250 delegates to different tourist places, enhancing their product knowledge and helping in promoting those locations. The convention also provides a platform for tour operators, hoteliers, handling agents and other service providers to discuss business and create synergies for developing inbound tourism.

Key Speakers and Topics at the IATO Convention

This year, the chosen theme of ‘Resurgent India Inbound’ reflects the need for innovative approaches in inbound tourism products and marketing strategies. The business sessions will be structured around this theme, covering topics such as marketing, promotions, exploration of lesser-known areas, enhancing visitor experiences, sustainability, legal challenges, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in tourism. We have also invited some experienced speakers like government tourism secretaries, tourism and hospitality professionals and some experts on digital marketing, artificial intelligence etc.

Post IATO 2023 Transition of Inbound Tourism to India

Since last year's convention, we have witnessed a significant rise in inbound business for all our members. Nevertheless, there is a critical requirement for the Ministry of Tourism (MOT) to undertake dedicated marketing and promotional campaigns worldwide to further boost inbound tourism numbers to India.

We have the full cooperation of the State Government, local stakeholders and hotels and we hope the convention this year will also be a grand success

Sanjay Razdan- Hony. Secretary, IATO

Recreational activities planned for this year besides the usual tradition of the IATO Run

Besides the IATO Run, there are entertainment activities planned for each evening. On 31st August, we will have the Karaoke Competition where the members will be participating. The Karaoke Singing has been happening for the last few years and this year it will be more entertaining as we have planned it to be more interactive and more comprehensive. Other activities have also been planned like spouse sightseeing tours, cultural performances and many post-tours.

Challenges faced while planning and executing the convention in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh

To plan and execute a convention of this scale where about 1000 delegates will be participating is a challenge in itself. However, we have the full cooperation of the State Government, local stakeholders and hotels and we hope the convention this year will also be a grand success.

Traction expected in the IATO Convention and Indian states participating

Traction for the IATO Convention would depend on factors like the theme, speakers, and location. Typically, states with a strong tourism focus or active tourism boards would participate actively. We have most of the States and UTs like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Goa, Jammu & Kashmir, Bihar, Gujarat, Odisha, West Bengal, Goa, Ladakh and of course, Madhya Pradesh participating actively in this convention.

Plans to keep the crowd engaged for the entirety of the convention

To keep the members and participants engaged throughout the convention we have many important business sessions planned as well as presentations by many State Tourism Departments which include:

Varied and diverse sessions covering different aspects of tourism.

Stimulative Panel Discussions and exchange of ideas.

Ample time and space for networking among participants during tea/coffee, lunches and dinners.

Cultural Programs that will Include cultural performances to showcase local cultures and local flavour.

A Motivating Speaker or a Stand-Up Comedian as a special session on the last day.

Evening entertainment after a hard day's work.

With our convention we wish to get Madhya Pradesh on an international tourism platform and with as many as 10 FAM Tours we shall be showcasing the best to our members

Rajnish Kaistha, Sr. Vice President IATO

The theme of Resurgent India Inbound” for the 39th IATO Convention

The theme is taken this time to keep in mind that the tourism industry and more so inbound is coming back again post covid from 2023. We now look at increased inbound activity for 2024/25 and onward. It shall not only help our members and stakeholders but also shall be getting more foreign currency into the country.

Bhopal to host the IATO Convention

Bhopal is a beautiful capital of Madhya Pradesh and with a very successful, “Heart of India campaign” has increased domestic tourist numbers to MP. Sheo Shekhar Shukla, Principal Secretary of MP Tourism and his team have been more than helpful in ensuring that the 39th IATO Convention happens at Bhopal MP. With our convention we wish to get Madhya Pradesh on an international tourism platform and with as many as 10 FAM Tours we shall be showcasing the best to our members. Who in turn shall promote overseas to their respective FTOs. Not only this, MP has an incredible wealth of tourism products ranging from culture to nature to the best of wildlife parks, heritage sites, forts palaces and many more. After our last convention in Aurangabad, the city has come up very well and so many direct flights have been introduced with high numbers of tourists now visiting. So, it’s here media like yours shall write positive about Madhya Pradesh.

Expected footfall for this years IATO Convention

IATO conventions are huge in numbers and we are expecting over 1000 participants. Our Registration is moving very fast and we expect numbers to go up more than last time. Honestly, our numbers are on the rise constantly.

Post-convention tours

Yes, we have nearly 10 fam tours and most are sold out to capacity. Places like Udaigiri, Sanchi, Bhojpur, Bhimbetka, Ujjain Mahakaleswar Jyotirling, Maheshwar, Mandu and many more important tourist sites shall be showcased to group members at a very nominal cost. The takeaway of these fam tours shall be enormous.

IATO will also focus on increasing the tourism industry by providing the best experience to coming tourists and making tourism one of the major pillars of the state economy

Mahendra Pratap Singh, Chairman, IATO Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh Chapter as the Co-Chairmen of the Convention

IATO will help promote Madhya Pradesh as a tourist destination

IATO will help promote Madhya Pradesh as a tourist destination because all the IATO members are handling foreign tourists as they have had a very good connection from last so many years, so they exactly know how to promote the destination. Madhya Pradesh is vastly unexplored and it is still undersold by the travel industry, especially for foreign tourists. Hence, IATO will also focus on increasing the tourism industry by providing the best experience to coming tourists and making tourism one of the major pillars of the state economy.

Inbound tourism in Madhya Pradesh and govt support to further enhance it

The current scenario of inbound tourism of wildlife is well and good but tribal tourism and village tourism in Madhya Pradesh is still undersold. Our government is organising the IATO convention for foreign tourists like the US, France, Italy and some Asian and Buddhist countries like South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam so that a large number of tourist operators can come to India and see Madhya Pradesh promoting them.

IATO to highlight key aspects of Madhya Pradesh to attract visitors

Yes, IATO is planning and highlighting key aspects of Madhya Pradesh like tribal tourism, village tourism and heritage tourism. This wildlife tourism is also promoted by IATO as we have a reserve sanctuary for wildlife tourism. Tribal museums are also opened in MP to promote tribal tourism.

Unique destinations being promoted in Madhya Pradesh

Yes, we are promoting this year as a ledger holiday for 3 nights as near Bhopal we have 3 UNESCO world heritage sites- Khajuraho (group of monuments) 1986, Buddhist monuments of Sanchi 1989 and Shelters of Bhimbetka (2003). We also have Bada Talab, Old City Tour, Shahpura Park and MP’s hill station Pachmarhi as a ledger holiday. But some areas of Madhya Pradesh are still overlooked such as Gwalior, Orcha, Mandu and Mahabaleshwar. Some unexplored places in Madhya Pradesh are Udaygiri Caves, Temples of Panna, and Chanderi famous for sarees and forts.

IATO has been crucial in boosting inbound tourism by advocating for favourable policies, providing industry insights, and facilitating government-tour operator collaborations

Trends and preferences in the customised package tours in India

Recent trends and preferences in customised package tours in India reflect a shift towards more personalised, experiential, and sustainable travel options. Here are some key trends:

1. Experiential Travel: Travellers are seeking immersive experiences that allow them to connect with local cultures, traditions, and lifestyles. This includes activities like cooking classes, village tours, and cultural workshops.

2. Wellness and Health Tourism: There is a growing demand for tours centred around wellness, including yoga retreats, Ayurveda treatments, spa experiences, and nature-based activities that promote mental and physical well-being.

3. Adventure Tourism: Adventure activities such as trekking, hiking, rafting, and wildlife safaris are becoming increasingly popular. Destinations like the Himalayas, Rishikesh, and various national parks are seeing a surge in visitors seeking thrill and outdoor activities.

4. Eco-friendly and Sustainable Tourism: Travellers are showing a preference for eco-friendly tours that minimise environmental impact. This includes staying in eco-resorts, participating in conservation efforts, and opting for travel options that promote sustainability.

5. Culinary Tourism: Food-focused tours are gaining popularity, where travellers explore regional cuisines, visit local markets, and enjoy dining experiences at renowned local eateries and restaurants.

6. Customised Luxury Travel: There is a significant increase in demand for bespoke luxury tours that offer personalised services, exclusive access to attractions, and high-end accommodations. This includes private guided tours, luxury train journeys, and boutique hotels.

7. Family and Group Travel: Customised packages tailored for family vacations and group travel are on the rise. These packages often include kid-friendly activities, multi-generational travel options, and accommodations suited for larger groups.

8. Technology Integration: The use of technology in travel planning and execution is becoming more prevalent. Travellers are utilising apps and online platforms for booking, virtual tours, realtime updates, and personalised recommendations.

9. Offbeat Destinations: There is a growing interest in exploring lesser-known, offbeat destinations away from the typical tourist trails. These destinations offer unique experiences and a chance to avoid crowded tourist spots.

10. Heritage and Cultural Tours: Tours that focus on India's rich cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and architectural marvels are increasingly popular. This includes visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ancient temples, forts, and palaces.

These trends indicate a move towards more individualised and meaningful travel experiences, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, wellness, and cultural immersion.

Government initiatives helped increase inbound tourism

Yes, Indian government initiatives like the Incredible India campaign, e-Visa facility expansion, and the Dekho Apna Desh initiative have significantly boosted inbound tourism. Additionally, improvements in infrastructure, enhanced connectivity, and promotion of heritage and cultural tourism have attracted more international visitors to India.

IATO, an essential governing body aiding tour operators in enhancing the inbound tourism surge

IATO has been crucial in boosting inbound tourism by advocating for favourable policies, providing industry insights, and facilitating government-tour operator collaborations. It participates in trade fairs, and roadshows, and conducts training programs to enhance service quality and global marketing efforts. IATO's efforts in promoting sustainable tourism have also significantly contributed to the growth of inbound tourism.

Tour Operators have to reincarnate themselves to prosper in this new tech-based environment and take the challenge by the horns to keep afloat in the market

Prateek Hira- President IATO Chapter Chairman-Uttar Pradesh

Key outcomes to achieve from this years convention for inbound tourism in India

The focus of this year’s IATO Convention is inbound tourism which is the core idea of IATO as an association of inbound operators. And, this is just the right time to be talking about the subject as this domain of tourism deserves much more attention now than it ever did. I have no qualms in claiming that particularly the inbound trade is not doing well and nor do any of the government policies give out any signal that it is worried about attracting inbound tourists to India. Our traditional markets of the UK, US, Canada and many countries in Europe are on a decline and the bait to attract inbound tourists by our government is not enough. The recent union budget has further dampened the hope of the industry by slashing India's publicity budget by 77%. It only shows our unwillingness to support inbound tourism and see it as a mainstream tourism domain.

Undoubtedly, India has strengthened its infrastructure quite a bit in the last few years and has improved immensely in terms of its international rating and perception but then, all this will now need a loud voice. We ought to go out and tell the world by way of a well-planned marketing strategy, which unfortunately in the case of India is missing. The much-talked-about ‘Tourism Boar’ has not yet taken any concrete shape and there is no clear roadmap of tourism that could provide the inbound trade with any growth, the direction, unfortunately, is missing. While many destinations are wooing Indian travellers and taking away a large India-bound chunk from other countries to their shores with many lucrative offers and visa-free travel, we in India seem to overlook and be undeterred by all this.

On another front, with AI taking the world by storm, Tour Operators like all other businesses have to gear up to face this underlying challenge to remain relevant and sustain their businesses. Tour Operators have to reincarnate themselves to prosper in this new tech-based environment and take the challenge by the horns to keep afloat in the market. Rate contracts with hotels and airlines, issues regarding guides and the issues of staffing are yet other major concerns of the industry which the members will discuss and deliberate on at this year’s IATO convention.

IATO Conventions are known to stir thoughts, generate ideas and bring about a positive change. Based on the outcome of the IATO conventions, our state and central tourism policies are influenced and hope for better days ahead is rekindled in the travel trade. Members of IATO are looking forward to the Bhopal Convention and have pinned their hope on positive outcomes, especially about inbound tourism this year which very badly needs attention to survive and grow.

This gathering will facilitate networking among diverse segments, fostering synergy among stakeholders across regions

Sunil C. Gupta, Chairman – IATO Northern Region

Key outcomes of this years convention for inbound tourism in India

We look forward to the IATO convention, where esteemed experts in inbound tourism will convene to emphasise the necessity of government support and immediate action to actively promote India as a year-round destination, mitigating the low season during summer. This gathering will facilitate networking among diverse segments, fostering synergy among stakeholders across regions. This collaboration will enable operators to expand their portfolios. Furthermore, delegates will gain valuable exposure to experiences in Madhya Pradesh through post-tour events, enriching the tourism offerings.

Challenges faced by tour operators in attracting inbound tourism

The lack of effective promotion of India's diverse destinations is leading to diminished interest, resulting in a crisis of hotel room availability during peak wedding seasons. Furthermore, the industry faces numerous challenges, including:

- High 18% GST on hotel rooms

Multiple taxes

- Competition from neighbouring Asian countries offering more attractive packages

- Soaring hotel rates Despite the growing online presence, tour operators will remain essential, providing:

- Expert, experienced advice

- Specialised services for group operations

- Complex, multi-city, and multi-dimensional travel arrangements

Their role will continue to be vital in navigating the intricacies of travel planning.

IATO Convention is a platform where the key players of the Inbound tourism and hospitality industry, bureaucracy, and Political leadership are present thus with the presence of All stakeholders better and right ways of achieving the desired goals are possible

Manmeet Singh, Chairman IATO Punjab ADTOI PB, Haryana Chandigarh Northern India

Key outcomes of this years convention for inbound tourism in India

This year IATO 2024 Convention in Madhya Pradesh has the theme “Resurgent India Inbound Tourism”.

Deliberations will be done on opportunities and challenges in Indian Inbound tourism during the session, which will help highlight the points of concern and solutions for the Indian Tourism Industry.

IATO Convention is a platform where the key players of the Inbound tourism and hospitality industry, bureaucracy, and Political leadership are present thus with the presence of All stakeholders better and right ways of achieving the desired goals are possible.

During the Covid period, tourists first started availing domestic holidays which is still pertinent, Inbound tourism has started opening up but not to the extent it was prior Covid period the points of concern are the higher Airfares, number of flights to All Indian destinations, Visa issues, rising hotel rates, the closer of many tour operator companies worldwide and change in workforces and their employees. Restrictions on International promotions and representations and presence of Indian Tourism offices abroad.

The good news is that India is on its path to recovery and with the diversity India can offer plus the new locations being developed with specific niches to ecofriendly, healthier environments for stay along with traditional destinations of India, foreigners have now more options to explore in India. Many countries because of their political, social and war-like situations are not preferred for visits by international tourists, but India can leverage it. India being an IT hub can use the technology to form online platforms enabling all world tourism industry players and direct tourists to make their bookings and travel easy to India.
