Drawing over 32 sailing yachts and over 250 participants from around the globe, the 21st Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR) in Malaysia is taking place from 20th to 25th January 2025.

In a press statement, Tourism Malaysia says that this annual event marks the start of Southeast Asia’s 2025 sailing regatta calendar, transforming the idyllic waters of the Andaman Sea into an arena where sailing vessels of all shapes and sizes showcase their elegance against the backdrop of Langkawi’s natural beauty.

Held at the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club in Malaysia, the event will see 32 sailing yachts from Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, China, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Australia, with more than 250 participants.

The organisers say that RLIR aims to establish Malaysia and Langkawi as a prominent sailing destination while promoting sailing and boosting sports tourism.

The RLIR attracts seasoned sailors, international yacht owners, and maritime enthusiasts from across the globe, blending competition with Langkawi’s renowned hospitality, tropical beauty, and cultural charm.

Over the course of five days, participants will navigate the pristine waters of the Andaman Sea, competing across various categories and classes, ensuring a dynamic and inclusive regatta.

According to the press statement by Tourism Malaysia, sailing in Langkawi is an exceptional experience for both seasoned mariners and novices looking to explore the seas. The destination’s calm, crystal-clear waters and favourable winds provide ideal conditions for beginners, while its stunning coastline and hidden coves offer plenty of intrigue for experienced sailors. Visitors can rent yachts, join sailing tours, or take lessons, making Langkawi a premier destination for maritime adventures at any skill level.

Malaysia’s rich maritime heritage

Beyond sailing, visitors can immerse themselves in Langkawi’s diverse attractions. The island’s UNESCO Global Geopark showcases ancient rainforests, mangroves, and unique karst formations, perfect for nature enthusiasts exploring by boat or on foot. Thrill-seekers can enjoy the Langkawi Sky Bridge and Cable Car, offering panoramic views of the island’s lush landscapes and turquoise waters. Water activities like snorkelling, diving, and sunset cruises around the archipelago’s 99 islands add to the adventure.

For relaxation, Langkawi’s luxurious resorts and spas provide world-class comfort amidst stunning surroundings, while traditional homestays offer an authentic, cultural experience staying with local families. Food lovers can indulge in fresh seafood at bustling night markets or savour local dishes like nasi lemak, a fragrant coconut rice dish served with spicy sambal, crispy anchovies, and boiled egg, and laksa Kedah, a tangy and spicy rice noodle soup made with rich fish broth and tamarind. Cultural attractions like the Laman Padi Rice Garden offer a glimpse into Langkawi’s heritage.
